We’d love for you to submit your work to us.
One thing we’d suggest, before you submit, is that you take a look at some of the work we’ve published here at Burnt Roti. It’s always good to know the sort of work a publication tends to produce. We’re willing to take a look at anything.
We're looking for work roughly around 1,000 words. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us or see our FAQ section below.
Submissions can come from anywhere in the world. We would like to hear on these themes in particular:
- Arranged marriages/Woman's rights
- Make Up Tips
- Food/Drink Reviews
- LGTBQIA+ articles around racism, coming out, personal essays etc
Please note that we may take a bit of time getting back to you even once we’ve made our decision. This is due to time constraints involved in the work and producing illustrations.
Please submit as a word document (.doc).
Do I have to be South Asian to submit work?
We publish work by South Asian talent, as this is a South Asian-centric magazine. We do not want to offend, we just want to give opportunities to those who are otherwise cast aside in the world of writing. Here are a list of other magazines that publish BAME writers:
If you're not a BAME writer, you can go get your work publish in literally anything.
I haven't really written much, can I still submit?
Yes! We know there's talent out there and we want to find it all! Don't bother sending portfolios (unless you want to interview celebrities), just send ideas.
What if I want to send in something you've never done before?
Send it! We always welcome the idea of trying something new, so please do not feel hesitant to send us anything - we will consider it all!
I want to interview someone in particular, can you sort this out?
We can absolutely try our best. We actually currently have a few interviews lined up and are looking for writers to match them with! Please email us if you're interested to hear more.
Do you pay?
At the moment, no.
But hopefully with advertising and more financial help we will be able to soon. We're an independent magazine that is funded by the creator, but this will change shortly. Please drop us an email if you want to discuss this further.
I want to work on videos/event with Burnt Roti, not actually writing. How do I do this?
We have a Volunteer Events Organiser who works with us, but are always look for more help on that. We would ideally like to put on live music, parties, quizzes and screenings in and around London, so if you have any ideas on this, please do contact us!
The video section is slowly growing and if you want to help with this (on mostly a voluntary basis), that would be fantastic. We have lots of ideas ourselves, but want to be able to work with creative minds.
