The Consequence of Us
20 female South Asian writers contribute to the most in-depth, desi game of consequence you’ve ever read.
What is this game ‘consequence’?
Ever play the game where you start telling a story, stop whenever you want and then someone else picks up the story, telling it in their own way?
So, for example Manpreet and Rishi are playing the game. Manpreet starts telling a story:
‘A gremlin is eating a samosa that was dropped out of the top floor of an apartment block in Mumbai. It looks around to see if there’s any more food that this careless auntie was throwing away when it came across…’
Then Rishi has to continue the story:
‘…it came across a small impoverished dog, who was staring longingly at the samosa. Being a gremlin, his morals weren’t on his side, so he growled and turned his back, leaving the dog to whimper and slowly limp away. The gremlin shoved the whole samosa into his fang-toothed mouth when suddenly…’
And so on. The next person who is involved then adds their part to the story. The point is for the story to become a ridiculous and hilarious.
Why desi women?
Because desi women are great. We have so much to say, so much to give and we’re restricted by not only our own internal struggles, but everyone around us screaming ‘you’re not good enough, even your rotis aren’t round yet’ and we’re here to reject the rotis; to burn them. We want to tell the world that we’re much more than docile housewives. We’re diverse within our own culture, with struggles that surpass just the CIS light skinned able-bodied WoC, because our culture has deep rooted issues that exacerbate these causes.
These women are creative, funny, intelligent and important. So we want your voices. We don’t want you to tell us personal stories about your struggle, we want to show the variety in your ability.
You’re not here just to educate people, as creatives, you’re here to entertain.
So how do we make that a book?
There are a lot of essay books coming out now that The Good Immigrant has become so successful. So the idea behind this is to use the same concept of an essay book, but to get each writer to create a piece of fiction. As skilled storytellers you will be able to weave through the game of consequence by having a chapter each. The first chapter will be written by myself, I will then hand it over to the next writer. When they have finished their chapter, it will move to the next and so on.
By the end, I want at least one apocalypse and cyborg Nani.
What’s the book about?
Whatever you want it to be about. I will write the initial story, but there’s nothing wrong in changing everything – it could possibly be a science fiction with aliens to start with and end as a rom com.
Each chapter is essentially a standalone piece, but the challenge is the game of consequence.
You may have to start a story mid-sentence, or at a dramatic pause. Or they may be a natural conclusion for you to draw from – that’s the fun in the game!
There will be rules that will be put in place, so that things don't go too strange!
